The snow is quite different between Honshu and Hokkaido.

I lived on Honshu Island for 5 months, Penang Island for 2 months, and Manhattan Island for 2 years.

I remember reading about the longest tunnel in Japan between Honshu and Hokkaido (Seikan Tunnel).

Let me introduce you to the Seikan Tunnel [1] between the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan, 53.85km with 23.3km of that under the sea.

Surely I thought it would be either of the (now-closed) stations [0, 1] located in the Seikan Tunnel between Honshu and Hokkaido.

It's the last train-carrying ship that used to sail between Honshu and Hokkaido (a particularly dangerous stretch of sea), before they built the Seikan Tunnel for trains.

It's good that you compared us to Honshu because the Japanese have managed to build a high speed line connecting both ends of that island, with a lot less drama.

I'm based in "snow country" which is Northern East Honshu to Hokkaido, Japan.

I lived in Okinawa for several years and remember how loathe they were to associate themselves with the Japanese Mainland "Honshu" - even calling themselves "Okinawan" and not Japanese with adamant fervor.

In Japan, the density is highly concentrated on Honshu, and even then it's concentrated into certain cities and prefectures.

In comparison, Hokkaido is too cold and isolated, no high speed rail link to Chitose/Sapporo area or to mainland (Honshu).

Their bullet train system has a separate rail covering the whole main island of Honshu.
