Bohdan Khmelnytskyi was Hetman of Ukraine since 1654, almost century before Russian Empire was created in 1721.

I think you could even argue that the 2nd Hetman constituted a Ukrainian state with some sense of a separate Ukrainian identity (Russian officer corps aside).

Turkic origin is not the only possible root - there is also a Scandinavian theory that ties hetman and otaman together (their meaning is similar and at some point was used interchangeably) and also a Germanic root.

Ukrainians, who have more experience with democracy than nearly any other European ethnicity due to their tradition of not having aristocracy, have a saying, that can be roughly paraphrased as: we elect our hetman, but the next day we complain about the decisions.

Some casual players do indeed use the alternative names, but pretty much everyone I know uses „hetman” for the queen.

Also, even though the official (as in: approved by some chess institutions in the country) name for the queen is "hetman", I'd say 90%+ Poles say "królowa" (literally queen).

I, personally, use «Hetman: War Stories» for Arma3 to improve my skills, with all helpers turned off, with weakest army against strongest at highest AI level.
