The dot-matrix elements have only just enough resolution for text and are incapable of rendering legible halftone type.

So the next version just printed text describing the ingredients and delivery instructions, which took a lot less time to fax and was a lot more readable than a halftone image.

I feel like I'd be happy to let those go if I could get a non-scanned version (don't want scanned halftone dots, I want the original source).

I am ignorant as to what tools a draft-mans hand for shading then, but I am sure hatching would be easier than creating a fine range of halftone grays.

Nah, he's right - pixellation and macroblocking on a supposedly vintage photograph just kills it for me - it's become my test for whether an Irish bar is fake or not:-) One handy trick if your historical source photo is just too small is to resize and then apply a halftone effect - at least the analog-type distortion is consistent with that of newspapers, textbooks etc.

The second most fun tool was the stat camera, which allowed you to resize photo or type by physically moving the photo or type from the camera lens, or allow you to put a halftone filter over a black and white photo to allow for single colour printing.

The very short explanation: * Split source image into red, green, and blue channels * Run through the halftone qr generator[0] * Recombine resulting QR codes into an RGB image * Average combined QR codes with the source image I'll probably post an article walking through the process using imagemagick some time next in August.

My initial version would draw a preview of the pizza on the screen, and then fax the image over to the pizza parlor, which confused them a lot because they couldn't tell which ingredients I wanted by looking at the black and white halftone screen printed pizza picture.

I made something similar to this using a combination of 256 color mode and unicode halftone characters for "dithering" between the foreground/background colors.

Transforming with ICC profile will give you a result that might be closer to how a screen printer would turn your digital image into a four colour print, but more advanced screen printing workflows these days tend to use “rip” software that handles many layers (eg: 12 colors instead of 4) and stochastic screening [3] which produces quite different results than what most halftone shaders are doing.
