If the Apple position is that there's no iPhone, then Gruber shows why the idea is stupid.

But Gruber (fanboy that he is) is drawing the conclusion that AT&T must be at fault.

Keep in mind this was written in 2002, when it pretty much WAS impossible to develop the iPhone as we know it, and as Gruber describes.

All I'm saying is that Gruber tends to instinctively side with Apple in any dispute, and defend them passionately.

The Gruber quote is (as is typical for him, I guess) insane hyperbole.

I'm not criticizing Gruber for being an Apple fan.

On the same hardware, 10.5 (what the iPhone's OS is a branch of) would be a good bit faster than the version 10.1 that was available when Gruber wrote his article.

I don't see where Gruber takes that into consideration.

In defense of the OP, one of Gruber's favorite pastimes is his so-called "claim chowder".

It's easy to poke fun of Gruber now, but back in 2002 Macs, "beefy" two-processor desktop machines, were barely running OS X.

As for the "Apple would have fixed it" assertion, or the question of why the number of complaints have gone up as iPhone users have, Gruber's blindness to his own biases is truly startling.

Setting aside Gruber’s dripping condescension and evidently complete lack of understanding that not every web site can or should be DF or The Loop, when you’re a company like Mobile Nations or anyone else that consists more of one lone “raconteur” and has to do things like pay writers, designers, and tech people, you’re fucked.

Gruber's page list 10 kinds, easy to remember for anyone; balanced, minimal and generic document feature set.

HN does it right, but Gruber's example seems to put the period in the URL.

Gruber's a smart guy, but he's also a completely reliable Apple apologist.
