It reminds me of the US congressional escape bunker under the Greenbrier hotel in West Virginia.

Because Greenbrier County did not offer public schooling for African-American students past the eighth grade...

It took a long time (for the general public) to learn how strategically important the Greenbrier was; there could be all sorts of baggage there.

The wealthy retreat to Greenbrier or go skiing at Snowshoe Mountain.

Interesting -- this reminds me of the the Greenbrier Bunker[0] which was a secret fallout shelter intended to house Congress in the event of a nuclear strike on DC.

I have tons of relatives from Greenbrier County.

I can find my blind, my car, and maybe a carcass on a pristine forest floor on some pretty dark nights, but if that thing jumped into some greenbrier or other brush, good luck.

The problem with Mount Weather after 1974 was the same problem as the Greenbrier bunker had after 1992 -- the entire value of a facility like that is dependent on the Soviets not knowing it exists, because hydrogen bombs are so powerful that it's pretty much impossible to build anything that can survive a direct hit.

There's the Pentagon, Raven Rock Mountain Complex, Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, Cheyenne Mountain Complex, the Greenbrier bunker, the Peters Mountain facility, 33 Thomas Street, nearly a dozen aircraft carriers, Camp David, and god knows how many military bases.

There are other similar facilities from the same era now known to the public, like Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, Mount Weather in Virginia, and Raven Rock ("Site R") in Pennsylvania, but since those all still have some operational role they offer less access to the public than the Greenbrier bunker (which was decommissioned after the Post story) does.

The only way facilities like the Greenbrier, or Mount Weather, or even Cheyenne Mountain could hope to survive in a full-out nuclear war would be if they were secret enough so that the enemy wouldn't target them directly.
