I thought the Flemish version was much nicer, despite some Flemish phrasing sounding off as Dutch...

The dutch-speaking people (flemish and dutch) are typically fairly good at english so that shouldn't be a problem at all.

Also Brussels has changed from a Flemish speaking city to a French speaking one in a short space of time.

There's a problem with Belgium: it generates street names in flemish for cities in the french speaking part of the country.

Again, Afrikaans and Dutch seem to be dialects of the same language (and, I think, Flemish as well).

I also tend to like 17th century Dutch and Flemish art (Reubens, Hals, Rembrant, and of course Vermeer).

We live in France now, and where she comes from is a topic that never comes up, the last time it happened was with Flemish tourists.

I tend to lump the Flemish in with the Dutch without thinking.

But Disney doesn't seem to understand: it dubs programs in Dutch, and you get Hanna Montana and others dubbed with an awful (to my Flemish ears) Dutch accent.

The cinema usually had far more Flemish speaking people in the VO screenings than French speaking, so I assume they went to the VF ones.

(For those wondering: Flemish is the Belgian variant of Dutch.) And i agree..

In Belgium it is a criminal offence to 'insult' a police officer, they call it "Smaad aan de politie" in Dutch/Flemish.

Or in the words of Cervantes, "translation from one language into another [...] is like gazing at a Flemish tapestry with the wrong side out."

They would wear weird dresses (the Germans), eat weird stuff (the Danish), have a weird Santa Claus (the Belgian, pardon, Flemish), just to think they are "different".

You might not be aware of it but it is indeed a common usage in both Dutch and Flemish, especially in the diminutive.

For example, Timon&Pumba in The Lion King are Flemish, to great effect.

Maybe we should call it a Dutch-Flemish meetup and pick Eindhoven for a central location?
