Also a small nitpick, an espadrille is not a woman’s shoe, it’s a style as far as I’m aware.

An espadrille is a particular style of shoe.

The fashion-related words (taffeta, chignon, espadrille, etc) being known more to women makes sense to me, but I'm not sure why the three Japanese words are more known to men.

Otherwise, I can say something like this and expect you to understand me: Most people believe that an onlooker underhandedly ignores an omphalos, but they need to remember how non-chalantly the cigar about an espadrille laughs out loud.

I know "espadrille" because a man in an Agatha Christie novel was described as wearing them, so I looked it up (this was years ago).

A quick glance at wikipedia suggests this isn't correct: In the 1940s, upper-class students were the first to oppose Peronist workers, with the slogan: "No to espadrille dictatorship" (No a la dictadura de las alpargatas).
