Sure, the latest engines from GE or P&W are more efficient than the engines of the 80s, but not dramatically so.

JS engines use all the remaining bits for tagging, not just bits resulting from 8- or 16-byte alignment.

Also different engines are built for different needs and a catchall engine ends up being not too great at anything.

Fuel cells will likely be the filler application to directly replace fossil fuel engines.

But generally, no matter what sane thing you do to these numbers, halve them, double them (maybe cheaper cars use crappier batteries/engines, maybe they mean light trucks too, etc), it's still "a lot of extra to plan for".
