Note that this was written with Phoenix v0.8 and Ecto 0.2 [0]; Phoenix is currently in 0.13 and Ecto in 0.11.

We don't ship with any DB layer today, but Ecto is the defacto choice for sql.

As others have said, Ecto is the layer you would use to connect to Postgresql.

I use Ecto with Elixir in my day job, and it has a pretty good query building type solution.

If someone's using ecto, they're using postgrex rather than epgsql, for instance.

How can I do object level permissions with Phoenix and ecto?

I used Ecto in Phoenix to connect to PostgreSQL.

So this write-up really helps remove the overwhelming feeling I've had about starting, because I don't need liveview or ecto or all the other stuff but most of the learning resources focus on that.

Ecto and PostgreSQL seems the most mature option, though there's a Redis library and of course Mnesia.

Elixir's core-team develops and maintains Ecto, which is easy to drop it and start using.

Ecto still has a long way to go, but for most apps, it is sufficient.
