You're correct, but I can see that there's certainly a place for having a single solution that works across all ecosystems.

The reason this thread exists is because other options with strong ecosystems and better performance which accomplish the above mentioned stuff just don't seem to exist.

The juxtaposition of large apps that support the desired feature and a small app that just does the one desired feature is where larger app stakeholders are trying to hold user base by providing the best of both words by splitting up apps and creating app ecosystems “constellations”.

I think the gain that people are aiming for is "write once, run everywhere." Especially if you're a lone developer - it's one thing to learn the intricacies of one platform (like web), but learning the ecosystems for Android, iOS (maybe you don't even own a mac to develop with), and native desktop apps...

I don't think we disagree on too much here, and I see your point - but the thing to remember is that, for some people in your "life will go on" scenario, life will in fact not go on if the habitats they rely on for survival are destroyed, even if to you and I those ecosystems are merely an enormous benefit, not a necessity.
