In comparison, Ecole normale sup turns extremely bright and knowledgeable people into great programmers, not such a great accomplishment IMO.

I come from a French grande ecole but from my experience, I prefer people coming out of Supinfo and Epita/Epitech than people fresh out of a French Grande Ecole.

At the end I went to another 'grande ecole' that was doing maths and statistics, with a few programming courses.

I would guess ETH Zurich and, to a lesser degree, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne has something to do with it.

As a French I'm always find those rankings entertaining: for exemple the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) is ranked 65 with a research score 37.1.

We are two young engineers freshly graduated in CS from a french engineering school (Ecole Centrale Paris).

Fair enough, that said I feel it's a waste of resources to allocate someone from a 'Grande Ecole' to low level things like a rail app.

Prep schools are somewhat equivalent to the first two years of university, with a bit of literature/philosophy and foreign language classes, but prep schools are much intense and exams are harder (disclaimer: I did prep school and a "Grande Ecole", and and also have an Msc from a University).
