I travelled to Croydon a couple of times recently and it was never just 20 minutes.

Despite the jokes (Croydon has a bad reputation; mostly undeserved these days), Croydon is about average for London boroughs when it comes to crime, and far better than Westminster (which has the biggest concentration of London nightlife).

Bromley or South Croydon is full of actual countryside and the occasional bit of woodland with far fewer people, and still in London, for example.

I kept searching for London / Croydon / Brighton expecting my city to update.

The impression I've gotten from various maps is that Croydon is fairly high-crime.

Perhaps, but you don't need an army of sophisticated actuaries to figure this year's number for Croydon is not too different from the last 20 years of data.

If people can be bothered to commute just a little bit further out, you can in fact get a decent family home in Croydon for example, for 200k-300k.

I went to school by train in Croydon about 20 years ago from age 13 and only had two very minor incidents (both caused by other kids from different schools).

I live in Croydon (for those who don't know, it's one of the largest London Boroughs; there are 30 of them), and here there's huge numbers of police around the town centre all weekend.

I saw her speak at one of the Croydon Tech City events, and it's sad to see one of the founders of such a great educational organization like Code Club effectively get pushed out over the (possibly perceived - it's not clear Google or whomever actually asked for this in any way) sensitivity of some corporate partner.

Also when you say "family home in Croydon" do you mean there are any good schools with catchment areas in Croydon?

For me, "going in to town" means going in to Croydon - a city centre with it's own large high street and multiple shopping centres at the outskirts of London.

That's not even in London!", but as it turns out, apparently it's possible to go from Croydon Rail station to London Bridge in 14 minutes!

Croydon for example is quite affordable and well-connected in terms of public transport (20 minutes to Victoria or Waterloo).

There is no need to price the cost of insuring a 30 year old white male living in Croydon.

Croydon is unusual, since those trains (actually to Victoria or London Bridge) run all night.
