It seems entirely possible that he was just an actor and producer, and the works commonly attributed to him were the anonymously published work of a woman, either Emilia Bassano or another woman of her acquaintance.

The far more likely explanation for all the evidence cited in the article is that Shakespeare got to know many interesting people who could tell him about faraway lands and aristocratic life, which fed into the settings of his plays, and Bassano was one of those acquaintances.
