I know they are both Afro-Asiatic languages, but on different ends of the spectrum (Arabic is a not Cushitic language).

They seem phonetically similar because both Somali and Arabic are Afro-Asiatic languages.

Maltese, interestingly, is the only Afro-Asiatic derived language.
