The name is presumably a reference to Peter Abelard who was not a nice man (very clever, of course).

The Letters of Abelard and Heloise is wonderful and completely evergreen since it's about love and broken hearts.

In 2000, abelard.org negotiated with Doubleday, a division of Random House, Inc.

If correct, then the story's copyright expired before Abelard posted it.

This is my first encounter with abelard.org.

Peter Abelard was accused of heresy for applying logic to theology, as well as arguing against Anselm's satisfaction theory of atonement with the arguably more defensible and sensical moral influence theory.

And the conflict between religion and science avant la lettre was as old as all of this (see Sokrates or Abelard to mention just the two most famous from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, respectively).

The page linked has some more information available, but its author (abelard?) cites from "Mein Kampf" later, naming the books author as "Adolph" (sic!).

His logical system is flawed in its handling of topical inference, but that should not prevent our recognition of Abelard’s achievements.
