On ‘War’s Unwomanly Face’, may I recommend the translation ‘The Unwomanly Face of War’?

Dabbling in politics was seen as an unwomanly thing ladies should be spared from.

Also — and I know this is a weird thing to say about such a horrific topic — I find the translation of the newer title, ‘The Unwomanly Face of War’, much more poetic or fluid phrasing than ‘War’s Unwomanly Face’.

I’d particularly recommend The Unwomanly Face of War which is about women in the Soviet army in WW2, and Boys in Zinc which is about the Soviets in Afghanistan.

I remember a story from The Unwomanly Face of War where a woman, so enthralled with Communism, sends her own young daughter to deliver a bomb to a house being used by German officers.

Many women believe they'll bulk up, they'll be unwomanly, men won't like them, women won't like them, it's ok to be physically weak as a woman because you can always get a guy to open the jar/lift the box.

I'd also recommend Nobel's Laureate Svetlana Alexievich book "The unwomanly face of war", a book of interviews with women that fought the war.

If you're interested in these kinds of books, I'd recommend you to Svetlana Alexeivich's "Unwomanly Face of War" in particular, if you haven't yet encountered it (and her body of work, in general).

I've never served and I don't know what is best for the security of a country, everyone fighting or all the women not fighting, what I know is that Svetlana Alexievich's book "The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II" gave me a bunch of insights into how it works to have women in War from first hand oral accounts.
