I liked smitty for the <ESC>4 that would show the script/command that smitty would use.

Smit happens(tm) Though I always preferred it from the command line (appropriately, the binary is named smitty: see, IBM does have a sense of humour).

Eh, smitty could be irritating because it persisted some changes but not others.

There were 2 versions: one graphical (smit) and the other text/console based (smitty).

Reading this discussion I'm wryly reminded of IBM AIX and it's smitty tool.

So could just go thru smitty to set what you wanted and instead of running it, just crib the command line sequence and pop into your script without even having to learn AIX nuances.

I loved smit and smitty, and would start new interns and juniors on AIX because the command lines to perform tasks would be generated and allow them to become productive quickly.

Smitty didn't get in the way of scripting, you could just craft up what you wanted and was F9 iirc you could press and see your options all as they would execute in the command line.
