Agree the kibi- mebi- etc is more clear and resolves a lot of the confusion.

Especially when some systems treat them as metric and some not mebi vs mega.

This unnecessary bikeshedding nonsense has already been solved by using mebi, kibi, etc.

No one would think of millibytes per second in that context, and the 4% difference between mebi and mega plays no role here either.

The mebi-/gibi-/...-byte (metric) definition was standardized rather late (late 90's).

My tl;dr: it varies, you can never trust it unless it's specified in kibi/mebi/gibi/etc., in which case you know at least it's one camp and not the other.

The kibi-mebi people failed to predict human behavior; that they cannot just roll out a vocabulary change to all of humanity the way you roll out a new kernel throughout a machine cluster.

(Nowadays I use Emacs Calc, but I still add a bunch of my own units, like the binary prefixes like mebi, gibi, etc.) I suspect that a lot more can convert millilightseconds to miles out-of-the-box now at least in part because of the popularity of this story over the past 13 years.

And so nobody else has to compute it, that's: 5,256,000 minutes in 10 years (ignoring leap years) 500,000,000 bytes of data (assuming mega and not mebi) An average of 95 bytes a minute per device over that 10 years, or an average of 951 bytes every 10 minutes, or more than 5k an hour.

Reminds me of "mebi-byte", which is similarly gross (but at least that had sensible motivation).

The ISO has allocated the prefixes Ki/Mi/Gi (Kibi, Mebi, Gibi) for that use, so technically my machine has 16 GiB or RAM, which is slightly more than 16GB of RAM would be.

When it is not clear from context what scale is being used, you can specify base-two by replacing the second syllable of the prefix with 'bi', so the scale becomes 'Kibi' 'Mebi' 'Gibi' 'Tebi' 'Pebi'..., and the abbreviation become 'Ki' 'Mi' 'Gi' 'Ti' 'Pi'...
