I don't know quite what the solution here is, and I certainly don't want the kind of dystopian "the ISP only gives you access to web sites that you pay for" future the sharpest critics paint. But I don't see this as a step toward that dystopian future.

It's actually very xenophobic but it does reflect the dystopian fears of the time. Cyberpunk has waned in recent years as the xenophobia has and the realization that this isn't the future.

I think it's sad that the first reaction to this is to think of it as something from "dystopian" science fiction. The oral medication disulfram shares a similar mechanism of action, but it has to be taken every day.

In fact, I suspect that this kind of device that is absolutely at the mercy of a corporation is much closer to RMS dystopian vision than any Windows PC. I think both societies have equal chances of survival, but the Huxley society has a higher chance of coming into existence because it installs itself in line with peoples desires, instead of confronting their desires.

The developments in the US around surveillance, domestic use of force and the way the politicians allow this to happen reads more and more like the introduction chapter to a dystopian science fiction novel.
