But, still, compared to the non-Paperwhite equivalent, it has a backlight, and it's a bit smaller.

Would it be safe to assume that reading from a Kindle Paperwhite with the backlight on is closer to being a screen than a book?

It actually feels a lot like backlight to me at night.

If you're going to use the backlight it's a worthwhile upgrade.

This lower contrast, and I can imagine I'd have to turn up screen backlight to the max if I used it in sunlight.

I understand having the laptops open to stop them going to sleep without an external display, but I'd've thought you could turn the backlight all the way to "off".
