Because directory hierarchies go from top to bottom - /dir/subdir/file.ext - or, globally, //hostname/dir/subdir/file.ext, or protocol://hostname/dir/subdir/file.ext etc.

It keeps state in `path/subdir/.gitrepo` which means that git commands like `git mv` just work.

You can prevent server-side code from getting shipped to the client by placing it in the server subdir.

Edit: thinking about it, Gobolinux could perhaps be extended with checksum dirs inside the version-subdir to separate different compiles.

The make utility provided by the NDK is notorious for not being able to process absolute windows paths, so we cannot use the all-subdir-makefiles command.

I got bit by this once, i think it was related to a maximum of 32k hardlinks per inode, which effectively sets a limit of 32k subdirs since each subdir has a hardlink to ".."
