IMO you shouldn't need yo kick your apps to get them to use the new hostname for subsequent connections.

You can also use ProxyCommand to perform filtering via sed / awk / some shell script on the hostname passed in.

You can create a filter in your GA view settings to ignore tracking calls from any hostname other than your own.

So for example, if you have servers set up as Nix packages whose configs refer to the Nix variable for the system hostname, then if you change the hostname, those packages will be reconfigured automatically.

Parsing a huge /etc/hosts for every single hostname lookup certainly is expensive.
