protomaps

Not sure about petabytes, but pretty sure Brandon Liu of Protomaps is hosting all the daily protomaps extracts via R2.

I've tried a lot of vector styles (all openmaptiles styles, the base protomaps styles, all mapbox styles) and generators (protomaps, openmaptiles, mapbox).

We've been self-hosting protomaps (aka pmtiles) for several years.

Also subjectively, I find the protomaps basemap themes to be much nicer.

I've tried that, but the openmaptiles spec and protomaps spec just don't provide enough details to be able to display a detailed map like the OSM raster tiles.

Nowadays the cheapest way to self-host planet vector tiles is probably to use protomaps.com and throw the.pmtiles file on a S3 bucket (AWS, Cloudflare, etc.).

There was a limit to the box size and if it was over some threshold, you had to have premium, or contact sales, or sth, I thought it was protomaps, but no tool like that there now.

I know that you deeply know map tech:-) but if I may make a suggestion - you might consider switching from Google Maps to Protomaps?
