The really funny part about this is just how high the demand is for on-street parking.

My last place rented near a subway station, 2hr on-street parking, no nearby garages, would only cover $250/ year for parking.

A bike lane that is next to on-street parking may place cyclists in the door zone[1], making it more dangerous than taking the lane.

And there is a large amount of on-street area that is marked No Parking for various reasons including bus stops, infrequently-used driveways, loading zones, etc.

The on-street policemen have to, because their higher-ups order them to.

The bay area relies extremely heavily on on-street parking.

Overnight charges vary greatly for a number of reasons, and people logically try to avoid them after 6pm (or was it recently modified to 8pm?), when on-street parking is free.

But, sending a few flyers, issuing a press release, having promotions, a TV advert, some on-street ads, etc.

To the extent that 1) cities allow designating street parking for EV vehicles in residential areas, 2) that vehicles standardize on charging texhnology, 3) that the cost of building a charging station can be amortized over the useful life, I think that you will see on-street charging options for your EV.

(Buses from there run as far as Tacoma, Everett, Bellevue and beyond, somewhat obviating the need for a car.) Further, there are at least 4 on-street parking systems - the Zone system applies on certain sides of certain streets and allows metered parking and free parking for neighborhood residents with a parking pass.

In the UK on-street parking for 1 or 2 hours usually has a "no return" period too.
