Then again, the Swiss are also crazy people who say nonante for 90, instead of being French and saying quatre-vingt-dix (4x20+10).

Interestingly, the dialect of French spoken in Belgium has a name for 90 - nonante.

And so on and so forth for 80 (octante in BE) and 90 (nonante).

I'd love to see this done for French numbers, and no cheating with huitante or nonante.

Growing in Belgium, we learned that our Walloon brethren use septante (70), quatre-vingts (4 * 20 or 80) and nonante (90).

As far as I know though, this is not the case at all, and septante/huitante/nonante sound strange to actual French people.

In Belgium and Switzerland 99 would be nonante-neuf which is ninety-nine.

Sad fact: French Canadian don't use the (much better) Swiss/Belgian septante/octante/nonante and the awareness in Quebec just isn't high enough to hope for a switch.

I thought nonante (and septante, octante) were only used in Zwitserland and Belgium?

They just never really became widespread and eventually completely died out in France (Belgium also uses septante and nonante ) but the Académie did try to promote them.

There are dialects of French that don't use that numeral system, Swiss French uses septante, huitante, nonante for 70, 80, 90.

Yeah, you can take an other locale and use "nonante neuf" instead.

Belgian French has "nonante", for instance, which would be better, but which just never caught on in "standard" French.

I'm a french canadian and I've never in my life heard someone use "septante/octante/nonante".
