Ie, Nanaimo was once a small town in central Vancouver island, with low rents and cheap housing.

I didn't know much about upisland, except some comments that parts of Nanaimo could get a bit rough.

Were the microwave links to Nanaimo and the Sunshine Coast replaced by fiber?

After everyone had politely to apologized to each other, and to the Beaver, they had a few Nanaimo Bars and all was well.

Consider Vancouver Island for example, a number of small towns on the east coast of the island anchored by larger cities of Nanaimo and Victoria.

If you go north on the island highway from Nanaimo BC on Vancouver Island the population density and town size starts getting small pretty quick.

Outside of the Vancouver core, pedestrian infrastructure was weak to nonexistent in suburbs like Richmond, Surrey, South Vancouver, etc or towns/cities like Nanaimo or Abbotsford.

I used to live in Nanaimo as a kid (Go McGirr!).

Costs of housing have spiralled out of control outside of Toronto and Vancouver -- here on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo the house I built in 2018 for $950k is now worth near $1.5M.

I went back to Nanaimo a couple years ago and it does seem much less grimy/blue collar than it was when I was a kid, but it does still seem to have that sense of PNW rust belt malaise to a certain extent.

Another example is going from "nanaimo and 12th, vancouver, BC" to "nanaimo and 15th, vancouver, BC": There's a bridge in the middle of that which crosses a 30' deep chasm, but you're showing it as being "very difficult" because you're calculating for someone cycling down the side of the chasm -- which would indeed be nearly impossible!

At least on the BC side, other than Nanaimo, the others haven't really shifted from conservative to liberal.

Bowen Island was a link to the sunshine coast, across to Nanaimo, and many other places.

Also, as a resident of Nanaimo: be prepared not to have access to Health Care.
