Women who wear the hijab should be praised to the utmost.

Banning the hijab was a good move - it is a symbol of oppression.

Eventually the hijab was tossed in the bin and she seemed essentially Western.

So although this style of hijab is much more "modern" - I still don't want to make a muslim woman feel uncomfortable.

There are many people in the US who would seek to ban the hijab, or other clothing that is perceived to be harmful to women's rights.

If I were a muslim girl getting discriminated against for wearing a hijab, I'd stop wearing the hijab.

I know women who find wearing a hijab empowering, and others who consider it the worst kind of oppression.

I can imagine how these prejudices affect us and especially people wearing a turban or hijab.

I thought it was weird but then I looked behind us and saw a woman and child, both dressed in hijab, who subsequently also received the full pat-and-search routine.

If wearing a hijab cause people to call you names, throw bad looks or more generally makes you feel discriminated against, what about trying not to wear an hijab?

The moderate, correct stance is to make sure that women who choose to opt out of traditional garb have the full protection of the law. With this foundation in place culture will evolve as it will - and maybe everyone will keep wearing the hijab, who knows.

When I see a woman in a hijab, I also tend to look away - but it's because they're worn for modesty and I worry it would be disrespectful to them to "gaze" longer than necessary.

This is exactly the problem, if you ever to encounter a girl with a hijab you would automatically treat her differently because of her clothing, you've already attributed a persons religious clothing as a form of oppression.
