If you go to Gristedes and buy a box of corn flakes you're going to spend $4-6.

For example, Gristedes and Morton Williams cost more and their fruits/veges selection is poor.

Things like flour, sugar, eggs, butter, olive oil, milk, and rice, as well as many of the "365" branded packaged products are actually much cheaper than "low end" grocery stores like Gristedes or Key Food.

Fairway / Morton Williams (depends on how you define “regional chain”, but both are Shoprite affiliates and Shoprite is on GP’s linked list) About the only truly “local” chain grocery stores I can think of in NYC are Gristedes and Westside Market, but I’m not an expert on the subject.

This is unfortunate, because Manhattan clearly has excess demand for good grocery stores, and the incumbents (Gristedes, etc.) are terrible.

Local grocery stores like Morton Williams, Gristedes, and C-Town are all pretty expensive.

Gristedes and Morton Williams are overpriced with a bad selection of produce.
