Funny to see what a female thinks of as "wearing the same thing every day". For most dudes I know, That's a lot of clothes to own.

But am I doing it because I want to attract "female attention"? Not exactly.

If we had good female representation in the industry and we didn't have a small cluster of vocal misogynists, we'd be able to make cute jokes that play on gender. But sadly, we don't live in that world.

All I know is that on that day there were two female developers who had gained enough respect from their peers that no one would fall into the trap of "providing a story" for the show. I think that does all the developers involved credit.

So what that YC has a disproportionate amount of women in high places and funds a disproportionate amount of female founders? I don't care, instead I'm gonna pick out some logical flaws in his arguments.

It gets into a female mosquito, hangs out in her gut until she bites a human, jumps into the human and hangs out there for a while mucking about, and then jumps back to a different mosquito. If malaria straight-up killed its host, it wouldn't transmit itself on to the next one.

You assume immediately that any attractive female is there simply for their physical appearance, not for the value that their knowledge brings. This is not an abstract PC idea of feeling bad about objectifying the booth babe, or wishing to avoid temptation, or whatever.

Additionally, the female reproductive tract is generally a hostile environment. This is by design, in order to weed out sperm cells with defects. Since this is a biological system, you're going to have some variation and some females are going to have a lower sperm survival rate than others.

As sperm travels in this coated tube, the ionic attraction causes damage on a cellular level in the sperm, the pull effect effectively destroying the sperm "tail" and preventing it from fertilizing a female but without hormonal/medical methods! For me, as an engineer, this was a true revelation.

During that time, the female arresting officer would periodically come by to taunt me, and tell me that I shouldn't have questioned her, and then threw a huge tantrum when I requested not to be touched by her for fingerprinting. They sent another officer in to do it, but for a moment, I honestly thought was going to beat the shit out of me.

To think that pg actually believes that there are no female programmers was the least charitable possible interpretation, and the only reason to have picked that one in particular was to confirm your own bias.

Edit: I can't find the study I was looking for, but they had a group of people evaluate two sets of identical resumes, with female and male names, for 'competence' and 'likeability'. For males, competence was correlated with likeability, but for females it was anticorrelated, even though the resumes were identical.

At the stage when people can be profitably hired by start-ups, the male/female ratio is nowhere near 50% among technical candidates. I'm not saying that frat culture isn't harmful, nor would I dare to guess why women are underrepresented among development professionals; but defending a thesis with such grossly false assertions can only harm it.

Their research demonstrates that both women subscribers and female avatar characters operated by male subscribers in EVE are biased toward a slightly lower chance of success in competition with their male counterparts.

And just to throw an anecdote or two into the mix, I have at least two female friends in tech fitting that exact description who very explicitly avoid Hacker News for these reasons. Every time they see a woman speak up about being uncomfortable with some aspect of tech culture, their impression is that the community here closes ranks to shout her down rather than accepting the legitimacy of her experience.
