Reminds me of a Ted Chiang short story, "Exhalation", about a being that cracks open and inspects its own functioning brain.

Snowcrash and a bunch of Ted Chiang's works seem to be in a similar but possibly unrelated vein.

Understand is probably my least favorite of Chiang's stories, because it's still too close to superpower fantasy.
