Skara Brae is amazing: it's a very freaky feeling standing in something still recognisable as a home after four thousand years.

Skara Brae is in an amazing part of the world for neolithic monuments - Maeshowe, the Ring of Brodgar and lots of others.

Skara Brae is both smaller than you think it should be (studied it in primary school) and more impressive (over 5000 years old).

When I was a little kid (1950) Skara Brae was just open to run around; my sis played house.

And I definitely remember mapping out all the dungeons and Skara Brae on graph paper.

Skara Brae was already ancient and lost when they were built.

Skara Brae also features in some of the Ultima games.

Skara Brae was occupied as early as 3180 BC.

A quick look at the Wikipedia article for Skara Brae mentions that pottery, flint and ashes have been found at the site which certainly suggests they had fire.

In all seriousness, I had no idea until just now that Skara Brae was a real place, and not just a setting for tales sung by bards.

Also we have The Neolithic village at Skara Brae (The site was occupied from roughly 3180 BC to about 2500 BC and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village).

Millbrae, California (suburb of San Francisco-San Jose right next to SFO) is a conjunction of Mill and 'brae.' Mill refers to Darius Ogden Mills (at one point the richest person in California) who purchased the land in 1860 and brae is a Scottish word for "rolling hills".

As kids back in the 1950s my sister and I could wander around inside Skara Brae.

As part of our work in deploying the Natick datacenter to the Orkneys, we had the opportunity to visit Skara Brae, as well as the other Neolithic sites.
