The anesthetist is the person who is primarily responsible for the patient remaining alive.

That doesn't mean it isn't rigorous - getting through nursing graduate school and getting board certified as a nurse anesthetist is very rigorous!

It’s also way more complicated, requiring a pre-medication talk, an anesthetist being present and supervised rooms where patients can wake up.

For the GP, most likely the anesthetist put a note in the chart that they need more or different drugs to go under.

When I was young, we had kind of a surrogate grandmother who was a retired nurse anesthetist.

It went from "tell me about your life" which the anesthetist uses to check your state to "oh so came here for uni..." to "huh the surgery is over" in a single cut.
