Yeah as someone who travels through all three, Luik / Liège definitely eats the cake.

Which brings me to my true story of meeting a guy from France that only knew the town Luik and never heard of Liège.

[1] [2] And within Belgium itself, many towns have their names in the 3 languages; Liège (F), Luik (D) and Lüttich(G).

Nobody in Liège call it Luik, just like nobody in Leuven call it Louvain.

Reminds me of Luik/Liege in Belgium just across the border form Maastricht.

In practice they consolidate packages from several sellers into one shipment where possible (although of course with a long-tail delay), and fly it to their new distribution center in Luik.

What I find interesting is that the road signs in the Netherlands say Liège whereas in the few km of Vlaanderen on the way there, they insist on Luik.

For example, the number of translations for a small city in Belgium called Liège/Lüttich/Luik is just confusing, and it's not even a popular tourist destination (everyone drives through it on their way south, but nobody goes there because it looks very ugly when you only drive through it on the highway).
