What's even more staggering is that Ultima Underworld 1 was actually released before Wolfenstein 3D, the predecessor to Doom!

I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D and Doom as "shareware" which defined a fairly large chunk of the indie market back in the early 90's.

This article reminded me of a trend I noticed when reading the book "Masters of Doom," which discussed (among other things) the graphical improvements that made games like Wolfenstein and Doom so impressive.

What about Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, etc?

So potentially I would be okay with a Wolfenstein-like game where the player operates strictly against these powers/symbols, but doing this consequently in online multi-player games seems difficult.
