It's also the preferred weapon for varmint shooting such as helping cattlemen clear ground hogs from pasture land.

The .30-06 is roughly 3x more powerful than the .223 fired by an AR15 which is really just a glorified varmint round. I seriously doubt you really shoot/hunt/own weapons based on the statements you just made.

Thank you, we have similar notions of what a varmint rifle is. My somewhat fluid ordering of rifles is: varmint -> plinker -> hunting -> assault -> anti-materiel.

That is technically varmint hunting where there is no limit on the number of animals taken and the goal is to mow down as many as possible.

The only thing open right now, in most states, is varmint hunting which isn't very popular. Hunting season for large ungulates, deer/elk/moose, usually starts in late August early Sept and runs through December.

For the federal prosecutor, it's just another day, another felony conviction, another varmint pelt on the wall to advance your career. This is what they're thinking.

This ban while strict is actually more than the cosmetic 'assault rifle ban' given the strict magazine size limits for all but essentially 'varmint gun' calibers. One can debate the effectiveness of it but the features of some actual substance in this case.

Realistically, a pair of golf clubs would be more dangerous in trained hands than whole swaths of competition and small varmint guns. This is the problem with society at large - rather than seek to understand gun culture, you dismiss it as being all about killing people, and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Obviously they need to be used carefully, like anything else that's designed specifically to be poisonous but these seem safer and more targeted than leaving out a dead varmint that's been laced with poison.

The fun of an affected machismo and showing up your friends at the target range notwithstanding, there is such a thing as overkill, and there comes a point where it is economically silly to address varmint problems with higher-power, longer-range cartridges. A cartridge that will humanely drop an elk at 300 meters will, without question, ruin a coyote's day just as thoroughly.

Prior to recent tremendous developments in bullet technology .223 was iffy except for smaller critters, it was in fact derived from the .222 Remington, a target and varmint shooting cartridge, at least in the US. Any correlation with the expiration of the 2004 "assault weapons" ban and the civilian market's response is bogus. It was sufficiently weak that the only effect was an increase in the cost of magazines, and since it had been our issue rifle for a quarter century there were plenty used ones to be had.
