While I may disagree with your conclusion here, I'm quite chuffed that I have now learnt a new word: "utile". Neat!

I find it neither utile nor humorous. I think compiling it to Javascript is trivial and not worth our attention.

It does have some utile value, and that value is somewhere between 0 to infinity. The speculators are hoping for a "greater fool" who will buy their assets because you know, numbers go up.

I actually doubt stock markets are socially utile,let alone HFT but that is an argument for another day. The real trading problem when we look at access and information asymmetry is not HFT but dark pools.

These cameras are all infinitely more utile than in 1984 once they are linked to facial recognition and gait recognition technology. In 1984, you could be an unnoticed face in a crowd if you weren't under investigation-- not so in our reality.

When I got it, the arguments were in terms of "utiles" instead of dollars. A utile would encompass quality, but was such a nebulous concept that it was of very little practical use. So when I said "rationally economic" I was speaking in terms of dollars, which you can measure and not utiles or feelies which you cannot.

So in that respect, why should I decide that one of my skills is the most utile on the planet and thus, everyone ought to be familiar with it. We all wear shoes that only a minority of humanity know how one can be built from scratch, and virtually no one can build one from scratch without requiring input from professions he/she doesn't understand.

Go down promising areas, end up with no significant inferences and a lot of utile effort, and in very rare cases, make breakthrough contributions. The key difference being that the things Media labs work on is usually in areas with underdefined academic landscapes, which makes it hard to make any significant progress.

They are strictly utile. And, of course, having obvious "computer" capabilities like a relatively high-resolution display and high-bandwidth short-range radio is not aesthetic; it's functional.

A lot of knowledge of complex processes to utile nutritional and medicinal resources probably predates our species... The knoweldge was possibly attained by means that we don't understand anymore.

At that point, generally, it's a matter of either pivoting the idea into a utile state or moving onto the next idea altogether, and isn't worth fluffing up until you've reached a point of utility enough that at least some people are willing to pay for it. If, on the other hand, you can get somebody's wallet open, then you should be able to scale it up.
