My interpretation is that TokuTek is conflating data structures' theoretical performance with their implementations' practical performance.

Bender wrote of the original papers on cache oblivious structures and not coincidentally is TokuTek founder.

I appreciate TokuTek's work in this area but their marketing should be taken with a grain of salt.

I think Tokutek saw the writing on the wall.

WiredTiger will be the default from what I heard, I've seen that the TokuTek people have slowed down with TokuMX and are building their own pluggable store into MongoDB.

They did eventually implement a compatible oplog, which was a good product decision, but the entire TokuMX engineering team recently quit Tokutek en masse so it's still not a great option in my book.

I mean, here there was a guy that had done some great research on algorithms and other areas and that I happen to admire a lot, just chatting with me, telling me about this Tokutek project he was starting (at the time the website was just an "under construction" page), and in general being an interesting person to talk to.

If it's based on academic research, are there other B-tree variants or improvements that accomplish some of the same advantages that Tokutek's fractal tree indexing does?

Tokutek used a fractal tree index to allow faster lookups.

Tokutek FT code is a pig, by every measure.
