Another thing that makes a difference is the width of the strips used in the stereogram compared to your IPD.

To this day the thing I think about when someone mentions a stereogram is this version of tetris.

Most people are not able to cause their eyes to diverge, so the scale of images in a stare-into-distance stereogram is limited by the interocular distance.

It generated one which is seated on top of a pattern of dead leaves that is so regularly repeating, it looks like a random dot stereogram.

Argh, the stereogram animations on this page are of the "stare into infinity" type rather than "cross your eyes type".

To view that as a stereogram would require "wall-eyed" vergence, which is basically impossible to do beyond a certain angular distance - I'd have had to watch it all tiny.

Stuff like character artwork (like the zombie or the plague doctor) fall somewhere in between - you get results that are good enough for self-shadowing, and with some tweaking you can generate a nice stereogram, but it's not necessarily 'physically accurate' (which in this case is another way of saying "I can't guarantee the results are what the artist pictured").
