One feature that Soulver has that I would love to see in Calca is combinatorics - you can do x choose y in Soulver.

I've been using Soulver on mac which does a lot of similar unit calculations, conversions etc.

I basically wanted a smarter Soulver with more programming constructs and better treatment of undefined variables.

I've also tried Calca[2], which seems really good but ultimately didn't replace Soulver for me.

The awk script should do if you want something simpler, but I'd recommend either Soulver or Calca for their extra features.

That looks like a cool app, but it is not a new kind of calculator: see also Calca and Soulver for previous work in this space.

I've used Soulver in the past but rarely open it these days.

It works fine for looking up information, make small edits, or do some quick calculations (although I mostly use Soulver or WolframAlpha for that).

Glad to see Soulver [1] has some competition.

Most obvious differences are the lack of a two-column view and support for Markdown, as well as support for function definitions, which I'm pretty sure Soulver lacks.

I basically stopped using "calculators" when Soulver and more recently Calca came out.

Highly recommend Soulver in this category as well - I probably use Soulver 100+ times a day, it's particularly awesome around things like throughput - you can throw things like, "10 kbits/second at 30 days in megabytes" - the sort of stuff people screw up all the time with excel when they forget to multiple by 8 somewhere.

Soulver is a lot more focused, and definitely more a calculator (albeit one re-designed for the modern era) than a text editor.

I'm a big fan of Soulver[1] too, which is basically a more featureful and less minimalist version of this.

Commenting system is different as well (Soulver simply ignores all non-parseable text).
