We call their Shintoism a 'religion' but it doesn't fit either, it's much more like what you list.

If you want to stick it to a religion, it would have to be shintoism, an animistic, purely Japanese religion.

You wouldn't feel any better if they converted to Shintoism and continued the jihad, would you?

It's not like I would know the standard symbol for Shintoism unless I googled it.

Nobody hesitates to call Shintoism polytheistic, and its core practices, to an outsider, seem strikingly similar to how a Christian, especially a Roman Catholic, interacts with the saints.

I think Shintoism led to the most interesting discussions in general, but Jehovah's witnesses are the most consistent ones (also I always take so much of their time and they're too polite to tell me to stuff it, I always feel bad after).

Japanese work culture is famous for glorifying the ability to suffer for your job, and Shintoism even puts a spiritual component to „cleanness“.

Whilst Shintoist Japanese were involved in horrible atrocities Shintoism, at least Confucian Shintoism, historically was quite anti-war.

That required total capitulation and the abolition of their State Shintoism, not a mere agreement to cease hostilities.

While most of Japanese are not religious, they do follow certain cultural customs from Buddism and Shintoism, etc.
