It took some time before SDF clicked for me, and IQ and Shader Toy were responsible for that.

If you hand tune the JS and shader code WebGL can be very fast and short startup time.

We don't need anything like a shader for RAM because the bus RAM is attached to is fast.

Actually it is OpenGL ES, but based on OpenGL ES 1.0 that doesn't really have any shader support.

I'm not sure if the problem is actually on the graphics programming side of things (bad shader maybe?) or it's just the javascript being slow.

You'd either have to implement your own hair shader, or you'd have to purchase a ton of extra hardware.

WebGL can be very fast though hand tuned JS code and shader optimization is very important.

You should be able to implement those effects with either simd.js or a WebGL shader, no?

And there's lots of hacks for things like oranges (bump mapping -> surface normal tweaks) and then they're shader languages.

It lacks various shader effects like rain and looks graphically worse than on PS4.

I just wish we had widespread access to this kind of pipeline on the desktop (alongside conventional shader units).

And you don't need to fab the PCB or bake in any dram, so the per-volume costs of those shader cores is probably half that.
