I live in Saratoga and lived in Mountain View: the avg price of a resident (averaged between condos, townhomes, and single family homes) is well north of $1mm in those areas.

Now I live in Saratoga where I've a 20 minute commute to Palo Alto -- and again, am in walking distance of grocery stores, coffee shops, and biking distance of downtown.

In Mountain View this can attributed to location (and Sunnyvale which is directly adjacent is cheaper, especially the north parts of Sunnyvale closer to Mountain View), but in Los/Gatos-Saratoga this is entirely due to minimum lot sizes (my place is currently worth significantly below that -- but due to being in a small area that was annexed to Saratoga and which retained much smaller lot sizes).

It will actually be against my personal interest if these restrictions go away -- I happen to a own townhouse in one of few places in Saratoga where multi-family homes are allowed and big reason I did this, was to be able to convert it to a rental property (highly desirable in Saratoga -- an area known for its safety and schools -- as they're virtually non-existent) once we decide we want a bigger place.

"not too many people drive Ferraris or talk about their vacation homes" unless you're in Palo Alto, Atherton, Woodside, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Los Altos, etc.

As for Bay Area, the big issue are schools: San Francisco schools operate on a lottery system (with the exception of a single "test school", Lowell), whereas South Bay has excellent public schools available to all those who live within their district boundaries (Cupertino School District, Los-Gatos/Saratoga School District, Los Altos SD, several schools in Fremont area, etc...).

Saratoga is up in the hills which is pretty but basically excludes anyone without a seven digit network.

The Los Gatos/Saratoga area is one of the nicest upscale areas in the Valley.

The average salary in the Mountain View-Los Altos Union district is $100,530, while Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union has an average salary of $92,636.
