Soccer is short for association football, formed analogously to rugger, which is short for Rugby football.

I'm not a rugger bugger but every 5 seconds doesn't really seem like often enough to be taking screenshots.

Realy seen any of the spear tackles in Rugger and a few years ago one ofthe players at Bedford school broke his neck playing rugby.

The origin myth I heard was along the lines of 'I don't want to play rugger, but I do fancy a game of assoc-er' where it was an attempted play on words with 'association football' by someone at an independent school.

The right Private/Public Schools then Harvard / Oxbridge (PPE) playing the right sort of sports Polo, Rowing, Rugger.

As a mate who went to a minor public school (Bedford) it was Rugger, Rowing and Drinking Beer as the school sports.
