They can often even be leaving a role as a CEO-protege or private equity genius to follow a passion for solving a specific problem through a startup. Of course, as they are few and far between, it's pretty hard to find them.

That only happens in a true mentor/protege relationship where the mentor is fully trusted to deliver a great career to the protege. That existed in guild cultures but it's never found in modern employment.

You could be on acid at Woodstock in August 1969, protege to the CEO of a major company in January 1970, and a CEO yourself by 1978. If you worked 50 hours per week, you were considered extremely dedicated and would climb the ladder rapidly.

One thing to consider is that there need not be a formal "mentor-protege" relationship; you can get a lot of great one-off type advice from all kinds of people you come across.
