The comment about how accessible the film is reminds me of watching Ponyo together with my grandmother a few weeks before her passing.

Watching Ponyo was how I learned that people added meat, eggs, and vegetables to instant ramen.

I watched the entire thing, and I must say I love Ponyo even more now.

Netflix's problem is that they can't prevent #3 - case in point, my daughter discovered Ponyo on Netflix which was possible through NF's agreement with Starz.

Waiting a while before I show them spirited away, Ponyo spooked her first time round, but a year later and she loved it.

Totoro or Ponyo would be my recommendation.

Anecdote: I torrented Ponyo when it first came out, before the English version was available (it never had a theatrical release where my kids live), right during the Japanese theatre release.

We most recently watched Ponyo ["poh-noh-fish" as its sometimes called around here], had it playing on the background a few more times.

If looking for something "warm" go with Totoro, Kiki, Ponyo.

"Ponyo" (2008) - Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, and Liam Neeson.

I saw the movie last week in Japan, and it was alright, but not extremely good either (But since I hated the stupid "Ponyo" movie, it could only be better than the previous one...).

They recorded the entire creation of Ponyo, from Miyazaki's watercolors to the final released movie.

Stick with shorts suitable for their age, and move on to films (like Ghibli's Ponyo) at 4 or 5 as a special treat.

Ponyo or My Neighbor Totoro would probably be best for a first choice.
