Another oddity about this industry: perks like ping-pong tables, free food, and Rock Band tournaments.

You want to dominate at everything from company ping-pong battles to board game nights.

After reading the Quora post about getting into an event and playing ping-pong without paying I wasn't too impressed.

It shows a level of thought about people that goes beyond ping-pong tables and free pizza and coke (and ironically probably costs less than those things).

We've got semi-pro athletes, ping-pong enthusiasts, avid surfers, chicken farmers, jugglers, knitters and everything in between.

The offices are nice with large break rooms, ping-pong, standing desks...basically all the nerd stuff we engineers have come to expect in a good working environment.

Professional photographs on your careers webpage of your open-plan office, perhaps with a ping-pong table or arcade cabinet in the middle of a sea of whimsically-arranged single-monitor workstations, will count against you.

A lot of those things like polling and interrupt shuffling have side effects and might for example negatively impact other scenarios -- presumably not everyone out there is running single client-server ping-pong with small UDP packets.

I'm looking for a place where I can work hard and have a big impact; in return, I'm hoping to land in an org that cares less about beer & ping-pong and more about having collaborative, kind, and very competent people.

For those reasons, you will find all the cool things you would expect from a company in the Valley such as (but not limited to =oP ) ping-pong, 24/7 free food (imagine a big freezer full of delicious frozen Mexican food like cochinita, enchiladas, etc) great amicable culture, no office hours, among several other things.
