I often wonder what state science might be in Greek & Roman pantheism had persisted rather than being displaced by the monotheistic religions from the Middle East.

You are making an assumtion that movement of society from atheism and pantheism towards religions was unworkable for the same reasons as polycentric law. It is equally possible that there were other reasons for religions to develop.

Well, then maybe we could argue the same about religion: atheism and then pantheism didn't really work, so we invented organized religions with one major god. Relying on the wisdom of ancestors is a sure way to avoid growth and to not acquire knowledge, and it is precisely this trait in people through which they are usually manipulated.

Thus, one could argue that the true innovation introduced by Romans may have been the liberation of the formerly slave-like commonfolk to glorious Roman pantheism and literary freedom!

There's no way in pantheism for personality to be anything more than an illusion, which ironically is the same problem that materialism has with consciousness.

The "truth" I like to embrace is kind a panpsychic panspermia pantheism that recognizes that we as humans with limited perception and knowledge are probably part of much larger processes and there are emergent entities created in part through our minds/bodies.
