At least for illumos (SmartOS and OmniOS,...) there is a lot of work happening for web services.

Many coworkers of mine that have had little or no exposure to Sun/Oracle Solaris are now converts to SmartOS/OmniOS.

OmniOS should be perfect for you: designed for traditional server installs and with good package support.

They have a very clear and detailed release plan and recently hired some good people just to work on OmniOS.

I wish a few more people would recognize what a great system and community SmartOS and OmniOS have.

Besides SmartOS a more classical server distribution to consider would be OmniOS [1].

I worked there for a bit over three years, starting just before the initial betas of OmniOS and watched as systems migrated from Solaris 10 to OmniOS without any major issues.

OmniTI has OmniOS[4] which they (and others) have deployed extensively into production.

Each gets regular updates, and is backed by a company that uses the distribution in-house (SmartOS is from Joyent, and OmniOS is from OmniTI).

The two really "alive" Illumos distributions are SmartOS and OmniOS.

I personally am a "recent" convert, inasmuch as I had limited exposure to Solaris, and did not make the jump to it (or rather Illumos-based) being a preferred distribution until the days of SmartOS and OmniOS.
