So you have a docker container inside Linux emulation inside a Solaris-style zone on a SmartOS host.

For what it's worth, this is just SmartOS re-implemented in Linux (though lacking certain features of SmartOS), and funded by Google with apparently more flexibility on where you can run this.

There are some forks to port it to other platforms (like Joyent's SmartOS) but they're closed and not out yet.

This allows you to find Windows equivalent commands of whatever version of Linux/Mac OS/SmartOS/OpenBSD you're using.

You can't easily rent a cloud server for an hour to play with it (with some exceptions, like SmartOS on Joyent).

I wish a few more people would recognize what a great system and community SmartOS and OmniOS have.

So Triton is basically (simplifying) Solaris / SmartOS zones with the LX stuff installed?

It does solve the security issues though it does it by running SmartOS.

Deploying/configuring/managing CoreOS is different than RancherOS which is different than SmartOS, for instance.

Look at SmartOS for example - their zones run on bare metal and provide most of the vm features as well as strong seperation.

Most illumos-based operating systems (like OpenIndiana and SmartOS) will likely be more receptive to Let's Encrypt, though their desktop significance is also pretty low.

The security features of SmartOS can not be understated.

Joyent did that for SmartOS with their "Triton" project, which lets you run Docker containers on their (SmartOS) cloud.

I recall watching a talk (given by @bcantrill I think it was?) where SmartOS had implemented the docker api, but ran the actual "container" via linux emulation, inside a zone.

In my experience (as one of those "big boys"), it's usually more traditional virtualization, typically on top of a bare-metal hypervisor like Xen (nowadays via Amazon EC2, though there are plenty of bigger companies that run their own Xen hosts), ESXi, SmartOS, or something similar.
