The public record was public, but an employer or a nosy neighbor was not going to go to the trouble of finding your records unless they had a really good reason. For most jobs, it was not worth it for the employer to bother.

What do you think are common reactions from gun owners when a nosy stranger calls them on the phone and asks if they own a gun? Might it have correlations with the Zeitgeist created by the gun grabbers, especially when they dance on the blood of victims like with Newtown?

The problem is that since all the houses on the block shared one phone line, any one nosy enough to but in could eavesdrop just by taking their phone off hook. The original wiretapping laws were setup to protect citizens from this, not the Government.

However, it's also bad because you've no idea if it's being run by responsible people, a government agency, wikileaks, or just a few nosy kids. You should still definitely use PGP encryption if you're using it.

\n-People is more nosy and opinionated about your live. Well this is true, and can be difficult to adapt for city or suburb people. But I´ve noticed that most internet social apps are designed to replicate this nosy live.

A human exhibiting this same behavior - peeking in his or her customers' windows to see if they're technically violating terms of service in their private lives - would have been called a nosy busybody. This is a major reason to avoid Google services.

The point isn't that it's uninteresting to you, the point is that it may very well be interesting to stalkers, bosses, insurance companies, thieves, exes, "lost" relatives, arsonists, mother stabbers, father rapers, litterbugs, jaywalkers, identity thieves, nosy neighbors, and other undesirables. They don't want their life broadcast to every potential employer, client, lender, local xenophobe, landlord, insurance company, lover, violent ex-lover, nosy neighbor, obsessive stalker etc. that they deal with in their life.

Not only would I not trust SDF not to leak the content of your emails to unauthorized parties, I would not trust SDF not to simply read your emails for shits and giggles, or leak their contents in order to teach you a lesson for asking rude, nosy questions like, "Hey, is anyone else having problems with the mail server?"

To protect users on questionable public WiFi, or traveling through a country known for spying on its telecommunications, or who might be using an ISP with untrustworthy employees, or working for a company with a nosy IT department. Until recently, the USA wasn't generally considered part of that second category, and private leased lines were generally considered secure -- at Google and elsewhere -- for the same reason a LAN transmission within a datacenter is / was generally considered secure.
